INDUSTRY UPDATE FOR WA EMPLOYERS - CHANGES TO PAYROLL TAX EXEMPTIONS

Payroll tax exemption - important changes announced

To improve skills gaps, the WA State Government has just announced changes to apprentice and trainee payroll tax exemptions.

Effective 1 December 2017, the following eligibility criteria apply when hiring and signing up apprentices and trainees:

New employees

New apprentices and trainees must be earning no more than $100,000 per annum at the date the Training Contract is lodged with the WA State Training Authority.

Existing employees

Existing employees must have a Training Contract lodged with the WA State Training Authority before 1 December 2017 and must be earning no more than $100,000 per annum at the date the Training Contract is lodged.

This change is expected to fund thousands more training places and provide greater support for WA businesses, with the WA State Government currently exploring ways to redirect these funds towards an apprenticeship and traineeship grant scheme accessible by all employers.
