Volume

Cubed shape

Volume is the amount of space taken up in a

three-dimensional shape, such as a container or

length of pipe. Volume is related to capacity, for

example, the amount of liquid that a container

can hold.

Volume is expressed in terms of cubic units of

measurements, for example 5 cubic metres (5

m

3

). It is said to be cubed if it is multiplied by

itself three times such as 5 x 5 x 5.

To work out the

volume

of a cubed shape =

length x height x width.

Volume = 5 m x 2 m x1.5m = 15 m

(cubic metres)

15 m

(cubic metres) = 15 m x 15 m x 15 m

Cylindrical shape

To work out the volume of a cylindrical shape

such as a pipe, then you must use the following

formula.

π x r

2

x h (pi multiplied by the radius

2

and then

multiplied by the height)
